Hmong Museum Statement in Solidarity with Immigrant and Indigenous Communities

Hmong Museum stands in solidarity with our community, indigenous siblings, and all immigrant families currently facing the profound distress caused by recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in Minnesota and across the United States.

As an institution dedicated to history and heritage, we believe these actions undermine the very foundation of the American story. Hmong Americans, countless other immigrant groups, and indigenous Americans contribute immensely to this country’s progress, and the recent threats to these communities ignore the vital role they play our shared history.

The Hmong American journey is rooted in a flight from state-sponsored violence. Our community is here today because of the it's immense sacrifices made during America’s Secret War, where American trained Hmong soldiers and nurses provided critical assistance to American troops. Having lived through the trauma of being targeted by military and state forces of Laos, we are acutely aware of the long-term scars left by displacement and violence.

We condemn the use of violent force that has led to physical, mental, and emotional harm and the tragic loss of lives all over the United States by ICE operations. We speak out against the forced separation of immigrant families. These events inflict deep trauma that echoes across generations, and undermines the safety and well-being of our communities.

The mission of Hmong Museum is to deepen the connection and appreciation of Hmong American history and heritage through collaborative initiatives, educational programs, and intergenerational healing. True healing cannot occur in an environment of fear. We believe that by remembering our past, we gain the strength to advocate for a future where no family is torn apart by violence or systemic instability. That can only be achieved when our nation’s leaders are committed to thoughtful and comprehensive immigration reform that takes history into consideration. We remain dedicated to being a space for education and a partner in the collective effort to keep our vibrant and diverse communities whole.
